BALTIMORE– Mark Trumbo, the reigning Major League home run king, hit a solo shot in the bottom of the eleventh to give the Orioles their second straight Opening Day walk-off victory. On the mound, Kevin Gausman threw 5 1/3 innings and gave up two runs while Marco Estrada also gave up two runs but in six innings of work for the Blue Jays. The series finale will take place on Wednesday night at 7:05.
Pittsburgh Pirates (0-1) 3
Boston Red Sox (1-0) 5
BOSTON– Number one prospect Andrew Benintendi hit a three-run round tripper during the Red Sox’ five run fifth inning. Looking to build off of his Cy Young Award winning season, Rick Porcello got the start lasting 6 1/3 innings while giving up three runs and striking out five. For the Pirates, former first round draft pick Gerrit Cole gave up five runs on seven hits in five innings. Game two of the three game series will take place on Wednesday at 7:10 as Chris Sale makes his Boston debut.
Philadelphia Phillies (1-0) 4
Cincinnati Reds (0-1) 3
CINCINNATI– Phillies’ Opening Day starter, Jeremy Hellickson, drove in the eventual game-winning run on his first career triple during the sixth inning. Contributing to the win were also Cesar Hernandez and Freddy Galvis who each had a home run. The Reds made it interesting in the ninth inning as Scooter Gennett brought home two, but Jeanmar Gomez closed it out for Philadelphia. After a day off tomorrow, the series will continue at 7:10 on Wednesday.
Colorado Rockies (1-0) 7
Milwaukee Brewers (0-1) 5
MILWAUKEE– Greg Holland picked up his first save in his return from Tommy John surgery to lead the Rockies to victory. At the plate, Mark Reynolds finished the game with three RBI. For the Brewers, the injury bug has already struck. Starter Junior Guerra will be headed to the disabled list after straining his right calf coming out of the batter’s box. Tomorrow, Colorado’s Tyler Anderson will take the mound against Milwaukee’s Zach Davies at 7:40.
San Diego Padres (0-1) 3
Los Angeles Dodgers (1-0) 14
LOS ANGELES– Joc Pederson got his season off to a hot start as he hit a grand slam and ended up with five RBI in the Dodgers’ rout. That would not be the only one hit by Los Angeles though as they had a franchise record four Opening Day round trippers. Making his seventh consecutive Opening Day start, Clayton Kershaw allowed just one earned run and struck out eight in seven innings. In his Padres debut, Jhoulys Chacin struggled as he lasted only 3 1/3 innings and gave up a career worst nine runs. The series will resume tomorrow at 10:10.
Seattle Mariners (0-1) 0
Houston Astros (1-0) 3
HOUSTON– Dallas Keuchel started his season off strong allowing just two hits in seven innings as he guided Houston to their fifth consecutive Opening Day victory. At the plate, George Springer became the first Astro in 37 years to lead off an Opening Day game with a home run while Carlos Correa also drove in two. On the opposing side, Felix Hernandez gave up two runs and struck out six in five innings for the Mariners before leaving with groin tightness. The second game of the four game set will take place at 8:10 tomorrow night.
Cleveland Indians (1-0) 8
Texas Rangers (0-1) 5
ARLINGTON– Edwin Encarnacion hit a game-tying four bagger in the eighth inning to fuel the Indians’ come-from-behind win. Six Cleveland starters drove in a run including Abraham Almonte who broke the tie in the ninth. Playing in his first game since signing a new contract extension, Rougned Odor hit two round trippers to go along with four RBI. The series will resume tomorrow night at 8:10.
Kansas City Royals (0-1) 1
Minnesota Twins (1-0) 7
MINNEAPOLIS– Miguel Sano scored twice and drove in two runners as the Twins won their first Opening Day game since 2008. Although the score may tell a different story, it was a pitching duel through six innings. Twins starter Ervin Santana allowed just two hits in seven innings while Kansas City’s Danny Duffy struck out eight over six shutout innings. It was not until the Royals turned to the bullpen that the Twins began to score runs. The teams have a scheduled off day tomorrow but will continue the series on Wednesday afternoon at 1:10.
Miami Marlins (0-1) 2
Washington Nationals (1-0) 4
WASHINGTON– Adam Lind made his presence known on his new team as he hit the pinch hit, go-ahead homer to push the Nationals past the Marlins. Also hitting a four bagger was 24 year old Bryce Harper who now has five career Opening Day home runs. Powering the offense for the Marlins was Giancarlo Stanton and Marcell Ozuna who each had one RBI. On Wednesday, the series will resume as Tanner Roark takes on Dan Straily.
Atlanta Braves (0-1) 0
New York Mets (1-0) 6
NEW YORK– Noah Syndergaard and Julio Teheran were locked in a pitching duel through six innings before the Mets took advantage of the Braves’ bullpen. Teheran threw six scoreless innings before being pulled while Syndergaard struck out seven before leaving after six innings due to a blister. Leading the Mets’ offense was Lucas Duda who had a three run double off of Eric O’Flaherty. The series will continue on Wednesday at 7:10 as Bartolo Colon makes his Braves debut against his former team.
Los Angeles Angels (0-1) 2
Oakland Athletics (1-0) 4
OAKLAND– Khris Davis became the first player to have a multi-homer game on Opening Day since Jason Giambi did it in 2000 as he led the Athletics to a victory. Stephen Vogt and Yonder Alonso also contributed one RBI apiece. On the mound, Kendall Graveman went six innings and struck out seven. For the Angels, reigning American League MVP Mike Trout drove in both of their runs with his first home run of the season. These two teams will face off again tomorrow night at 10:05.
