ROCHESTER, NY – The Rochester Red Wings have added Toby Gardenhire to the coaching staff for the 2017 season.
Gardenhire, 34, will serve as third base coach, among other duties with the Red Wings. He was hired by the Minnesota Twins as a full-time coach in January and was slated to be the hitting coach for the Gulf Coast League Twins this season. Gardenhire was the head coach at Division III University of Wisconsin-Stout from 2012-16 after retiring as a player. He played 153 games with Rochester from 2010-11 and is the son of former Twins manager and current Arizona Diamondbacks bench coach, Ron.
Red Wings manager Mike Quade, who has coached third base since 2015, was involved in a car accident in late February while at spring training in Fort Myers and had surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff on his right shoulder. He will be unable to throw batting practice or coach third base while he recovers.
