The Section Five boys’ basketball B Final Four is set with games to tipoff Wednesday night at Victor High School. Winners will meet next Monday at Blue Cross Arena. Here’s the rundown.
No. 1-seed MYNDERSE (20-1/Finger Lakes East) vs. No. 4-seed EARLY COLLEGE (15-7/RCAC)
How they got here: Jake Jones scored 17. Brett Anderson added 15 points, and Mynderse, No. 15 NYS, beat Greece Odyssey, 61-51 in the quarter-finals.
Bryan Harrell (17 points/11 rebounds) and Tajmin Holt (16/11) registered double-doubles as Early College outlasted Hornell, 65-50 in other quarter-final action. Early College opened sectionals with a 73-35 win over Dansville.
Players to watch for Mynderse: Jake Mein (14.8 ppg, 9.8 rebounds 2.7 assists), Jake Jones (10.1 ppg, 2.1 assists) and Brett Anderson (9.2 pts 4.8 rebounds 2.8 assists)
Players to watch for Early College: Tajmin Holt (15 ppg, 6.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists), Bryan Harrell (19.4 ppg, 10.8 rebounds), Jagdeep Drumgoole (9.6 ppg, 4.3 rebounds) and Shandare Figgins (11.9 ppg, 5.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists).
Trends: Mynderse has won eight in a row and is looking for its first sectional title since winning C1 in 2013. The Blue Devils lost to eventual champion Wellsville in the semifinals of last year’s B2 tournament.
Early College is making the jump to B after taking the past two C1 titles.
A 6:30 pm tipoff is scheduled.
No. 2-seed NEWARK (17-5/Finger Lakes East) vs. No. 3-seed LIVONIA (18-4/Livingston County)
How they got here: D’Andre Saunders collected 14 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks to lead Newark, No. 25 NYS, past Midlakes, 64-50 in the quarterfinals. Brian Sharp scored 22 in the game. Newark opened with a 77-38 win over Bath-Haverling.
Cody Ullock scored eight points including the game winner with :10 remaining to lift Livonia past Penn Yan, 37-36. The Bulldogs beat Waterloo, 63-48 in the opening round.
Players to watch for Newark: Brian Sharp (14 ppg/ 4 3-pointers per game), Nate Beard (12 ppg, 4.0 steals), D’Andre Saunders (8.6 rebounds), Ben Cowles (6.6 rebounds) and Taylor Clements (11.0 ppg, 9.0 rebounds).
Players to watch for Livonia: Reid VanScoter Sr. G (15 ppg, 3.6 rebounds, 2.8 steals), Ron Loomis Sr. F (10.9 ppg, 6.2 rebounds and 2.0 blocks), and Barrett Lowe Jr. F (9.5 ppg, 6.3 rebounds and 2.6 blocks).
Trends: Newark won last year’s B1 title and has taken four straight games coming into the contest.
Livonia is looking for its first title since 2001. The Bulldogs have won 10 in a row and 13 of their last 14 games.
An 8:15 pm tip is slated.
