Kenny Speed netted six, and Ryan Kubanka added five in the fourth quarter as No. 2-seed Greece Athena came from behind to defeat No. 7-seed Brighton, 51-41 in Class A1 action, Saturday.
Trailing 37-36 after three quarters, the Trojans outscored Brighton 15-4 over the final eight minutes. Nigel Scantlebury chipped in four of his nine points during the final stanza.
Brighton’s Isaac Nelson connected twice behind the arc, and the Barons grabbed a 20-6 lead after the first quarter.
Kubanka dropped seven of his game-high 16 in the second quarter as Athena cut the deficit to three at halftime. Pat Meisenzahl hit two triples and scored eight of his 10 points in the second.
Kubanka hauled in 13 rebounds for the game. Meisenzahl had three assists and three steals. Speed had four assists and four steals.
Nelson scored 19 when Brighton beat Athena, 65-53 on December 9th. The Barons improved to 2-1 with that win. It was Athena’s season opener after several team members played on the school’s football team which advanced to the state final. Nelson netted 22 in a losing effort when Athena beat Brighton 75-58 on January 20th.
Brighton finishes 13-8 on the season.
Athena (18-3) will play third-seeded East High in Tuesday’s semifinal at Webster-Schroeder. A 6:30 pm tipoff is scheduled. Athena fell to Pittsford-Sutherland in last season’s A1 final.

No. 1-seed Irondequoit 68 No. 9-seed Greece Arcadia 37
Alex Goldsberry poured in 22 points. Gerald Drumgoole had 13, and Irondequoit advanced to a sectional semi-final for the the fifth straight season. Tysean Sizer had nine points, and Jeremiah Zitz added five assists. Thomas Finnerty scored 11 for Arcadia (8-14). Irondequoit (19-1) will play Brockport in Tuesday’s semi-final at Webster-Schroeder. An 8:15 start is slated.
No. 3-seed East High 46 No. 6-seed Canadaigua 43
Windell Lucas scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead East. Lucas added four steals and two blocks. Teammate Zion Morrison had 23 points, seven rebounds and three steals. East High (15-6) will play Greece Athena in Tuesday’s semi-final at Webster-Schroeder. A 6:30 pm start is scheduled. Canandaigua finished the season 13-9. East took the 2014 A1 title along with the 2010 and 2012 AA2 crowns. The Eagles hold the all-time Section Five record with 24 titles.
No. 4-seed Brockport 48 No. 5-seed Pittsford-Mendon 41
Antonio Alvarez scored 19, and Jake Juhrs had 11 to lead Brockport (15-6). The Blue Devils advance to play Irondequoit in Tuesday’s semi-final. Taylor Genier scored 11 for Pittsford-Mendon (12-9).
