ROCHESTER – The MCC women’s basketball team rode a big second quarter on its way to an 80-54 victory over visiting Niagara County Community College Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the ninth-ranked Tribunes moved to 7-0 in the Western New York Athletic Conference and 19-3 overall. The Thunderwolves fall to 5-2 and 22-4 overall, giving Monroe a two-game cushion in the conference standings.
Leading 17-13 after one quarter, MCC took command by outscoring Niagara 27-13 in the second frame. Lanay Rodney was 4-for-6 from the floor, knocked down a 3, and scored 11 of her game-high 22 in the second to help MCC take an 18-point lead into the locker room.
A stingy Tribune defense took over from there, holding any Thunderwolf rally attempt at bay to ease to the victory. MCC held Niagara to 28 percent shooting and forced 26 turnovers.
Sierra Green connected on four 3-pointers and scored 15 for the Tribunes. Torrie Cash added eight of her 10 points during the second quarter.
Abby White chipped in with a pair of 3’s and eight points, and Jaynelle Robinson added six points and eight rebounds.
