NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — George Washington’s Lexi Martins was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week while Massachusetts’ freshman Hailey Leidel earned Rookie of the Week honors. The awards, announced Monday, were for games played Jan. 9-15.
Martins continued her strong performance in conference play averaging a double-double in two standout performances last week to lead the Colonials to a 2-0 week. She opened her week with 16 points and 10 rebounds in an overtime win at George Mason on Wednesday. Against Davidson, the graduate student from Irvington, N.Y., was 7-of-11 (.636) from the field on the way to a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double. For the week, she averaged 15.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 blocks.
Leidel had a huge week in leading UMass to a pair of victories this week with a road win at Davidson followed by a home win against Duquesne. The freshman from Brownstown, Mich., hit the game-winning, buzzer-beating 3-pointer against the Wildcats highlighting a week in which she averaged 21 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals. In the road win at Davidson, Leidel scored 20 points and was 5-of-11 beyond the arc. In the win over Duquesne, she scored 22 points with eight rebounds and five steals. Overall, she was 9-of-20 (.450) from 3-point range and 11-of-12 (.910) at the free throw line over two games.
Atlantic 10 Weekly Honor Roll
Davidson’s Mackenzie Latt averaged a double-double for the week in games against UMass and George Washington with 17.5 points and 11.5 rebounds last week…Dayton’s Kelley Austria became the 24th Dayton Flyer to score 1,000 points in her career with 18 points in the win at Duquesne on Tuesday. Dayton freshman Jayla Scaife had 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field against Saint Louis…George Mason’s Kara Wright averaged 18.5 points, 9.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week for the Patriots. Freshman teammate Jacy Bolton posted her first career double-double 14 points and 10 rebounds in a win over VCU…Rhode Island freshman Nicole Jorgensen averaged 10.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots per game over two contests. She recorded her second career double-double with 16 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks in 20 minutes off the bench against Richmond…Janelle Hubbard scored in double-figures in both games last week for the Spiders, averaging 12.5 points over two contests. Richmond freshman Amy Duggan had eight points and three steals in the road victory over Rhode Island…St. Bonaventure’s Gabby Richmond averaged 17.0 points and 7.5 rebounds over two games for the Bonnies…Saint Joseph’s Adashia Franklyn averaged a double-double, 11.0 points and 10.0 rebounds, over two games last week as the Hawks recorded victories against VCU and La Salle.
