PHILADELPHIA – La Salle sophomore Pookie Powell was named the Big 5 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced by the organization on Monday. Powell helped the Explorers to a pair of Atlantic 10 victories and is the second student-athlete from the men’s basketball team to receive the honor this year (B.J. Johnson – Dec. 19).
Powell averaged 14.5 points, 6.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals over two games against league foes Saint Louis and Duquesne, turning the ball over just once in 61 minutes of action. The 6-0 guard currently ranks second in the nation with a 4.7 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Against the Billikens on Jan. 4, Powell scored 13 points and added eight assists against no turnovers in 29 minutes of action. He also added four steals as the Explorers pulled away in the second half for a 75-54 win. Three days later, Powell scored 16 points and registered six rebounds and five assists in an 88-81 triumph over Duquesne.
On the year, Powell ranks third on the team in scoring at 13.8 points per outing and is second in rebounding (4.5 rpg) and assists (3.6 apg) per game.
La Salle (8-5, 2-1 A10) returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 12 with a road matchup with Rhode Island. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., with the contest airing live nationally on CBS Sports Network.
