WEST POINT, N.Y. – The U.S. Military Academy held Loyola University Maryland to 34.4 percent from the field and 17.4 percent from 3-point range Sunday afternoon, and the Black Knights defeated the visiting Greyhounds, 66-57, in Patriot League action.
Army West Point (7-9 overall, 1-3 Patriot League) took the lead 48 seconds into the game at Christl Arena and never relinquished the advantage.
Jordan Fox led the Black Knights with 14 points and five assists, while John Emize came off the bench to score 13.
Cam Gregory scored a season-high 16 points and had nine rebounds for Loyola, while Andre Walker battled first-half foul trouble and finished with 14.
A Gregory jumper off a Chuck Champion assist would get Loyola (8-7, 2-2) within a point, 7-6, 5:10 into the game, but that was the last basket the Greyhounds would score until a James Fives jumper went down with 7:22 to go in the half.
During the 7-minute, 48-second stretch that Army West Point held Loyola without a point, the Black Knights would score 13 in a row to lead 20-7 on two Fox free throws with 7:49 on the clock. Loyola made it a 10-point game at halftime, but Army West Point would keep its lead between eight-12 most of the second half.
An Ian Langendoerfer three with 11:49 left in regulation made it a 45-38 Black Knights advantage, and the freshman made a pair of free throws 48 ticks later to draw the Greyhounds within five, 45-40.
Emize, however, connected on a jumper at 10:25, and five was as close as the Greyhounds drew for the rest of the game.
Army West Point controlled a 39-34 advantage on the glass, marking the first time this year in Patriot League play that Loyola has been outrebounded. The Greyhounds did have 12 offensive rebounds, but they converted those boards into just four second-chance points.
Loyola returns to Reitz Arena on Wednesday, Jan. 11, for a 7:30 p.m. home game against the U.S. Naval Academy.
