ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Boston University (8-7, 3-0 PL) forced Navy to commit 27 turnovers and held the Mids to just 39 percent shooting in a 71-53 road win on Thursday night in Alumni Hall. Navy (5-10, 0-3 PL) dropped its fourth straight game and has failed to reach the 60-point mark in each of its last four outings.
The Terriers had 19 steals in the game, two shy of their school record, and forced Navy to commit a season-high 27 turnovers. Boston held 34-19 advantage in points off turnovers in the game. The Terriers also shot 59 percent from the floor in the second half and 48 percent in the game, while knocking down 12 3-pointers.
Although Navy held an early 8-2 lead after a fastbreak dunk by junior forward Tom Lacey and a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Hasan Abdullah, Boston took control of the game and went ahead by nine points after 3-pointers by Cedric Hankerson and Kyle Foreman. A layup by Max Mahoney put the Terriers ahead by 11 late in the first half before a 3-pointer by junior guard Nourse Fox cut the halftime deficit to eight (30-22).
Navy committed 17 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, a season-high for a single half.
A bucket by junior guard Shawn Anderson and another 3-pointer by Abdullah early in the second half gave Navy a spark and cut the deficit to six, but Boston responded with an 18-3 run over the next eight minutes to put the game out of reach at 51-30. Boston’s Will Goff made three 3-pointers in a span of just 2:16 during the stretch while Justin Alston added six points during the run.
Boston continued to knock down shots in the second half, including eight 3-pointers, and the lead grew to as many as 29 points after a fastbreak layup by Eric Johnson with 3:31 remaining.
Navy then used a late 10-0 run to chip away at the 29-point lead. Senior Zach Fong scored five points during the stretch and freshman Kyran McClure sunk his first career 3-pointer. Senior James Hemphill scored inside during the spurt and sophomore Dominick Antonelli added a 3-pointer on Navy’s final possession to cut the final deficit to 18.
“We were very poor offensively tonight,” said Navy head coach Ed DeChellis. “In the second half we looked dead tired. We had no juice whatsoever. In the last few minutes the guys that came in the game did a nice job. They passed the ball, made some plays, made some shots. But overall we were very poor tonight.”
Anderson was the lone Mid in double figures with 10 points, while Fong added eight. Lacey pulled down eight rebounds to go along with four points and senior center Edward Alade totaled six points and five rebounds.
Alston posted 14 points and five rebounds to lead Boston, while Hankerson and Goff each scored 12.
Navy had a 36-25 rebounding edge and matched its season-high with 18 offensive boards, but the 27 turnovers would negate any advantage in possessions for the Mids.
Navy will now look to rebound with a home game against Colgate (3-13, 1-2 PL) on Sunday at 2:00 PM.
