Highlighting some of last week’s top performances in Section Five Boys’ Basketball.
Gerald Drumgoole – 6-foot-3 So. F Irondequoit Eagles: Inside/outside threat who thrives in Irondequoit’s system, comfortable pushing the ball in the open floor, at the same time makes plays under the basket; doesn’t shy away from contact. Consistent shooter from 3-point range, can knock down a trey in transition or coming off a screen for a catch-and-shoot. Creates shots for himself with solid footwork. May be at his best off the bounce getting to the rim. Catches and can finish in transition. Strong rebounder who quickly gets his team into transition with strong outlets from the defensive end. Visible defensive instincts, excellent off-the-ball-defender who anticipates plays well. Irondequoit (8-0) plays at Fairport (7-0) Wednesday night.
Connor Krapf – 6-foot So. G Pittsford Mendon Vikings: Deceptively quick point guard who uses change of speed to get defenders off-balance. Skilled playmaker, has height advantage at position to see over defenses. Soft touch in the paint, scores with either hand in traffic and after burst of speed. Has the ability to knock down shots from behind the arc, but patient enough to let the flow of the game come to him. Willing, patient defender who avoids getting caught over-playing. Makes smart decisions off the ball. Mendon (7-1) hosts Eastridge (1-7) Wednesday.
Jakhi Lucas – 5-foot-8 Fr. G UPrep Griffins: Sturdy build and low center of gravity, difficult to knock off the ball. Heady point guard who sees the floor well especially in transition where he consistently leads teammates in the open court. Deft passer in half-court sets, knows how to give ball to teammates where they can score. Keeps it simple. Easy to overlook in a lineup with student-athletes like Jeenathan Williams and Jabez Thomas on the floor, but can burn opponents and knock down open jumpers. Solid defensive presence, limits the vision of opponents with ball pressure. UPrep (8-2) plays Aquinas (5-1) on Thursday. Game will be played at Roberts Wesleyan College.
Ryan Mason – 6-foot-1 Sr. G/F Webster Thomas Titans: Dynamic shooter with range out to 25 feet, has lightning-quick release. Catches well in transition and can finish with either hand. Crafty use of footwork to create shots on the perimeter. Presents mismatch problems because of his size. Forwards struggle keeping up with him when he is 20 feet from the basket. Smaller guards can’t handle him in the post. Underrated defender, moves well on flight of ball, head on constant swivel. Strong rebounder who first looks to outlet but has the ability to bust it up the floor with dribble. Fierce competitor who makes savvy plays that don’t appear in the scorebook. Webster Thomas (4-4) plays at Penfield (6-2) on Wednesday.
Kevin Ryan – 6-foot-5 So. F Pittsford Sutherland Knights: Skilled passer out of the post. Sutherland runs offense through him, sees the floor well and makes intelligent decisions. Can score with either hand in traffic, uses solid footwork for back-to-basket moves in the low post. Aggressive rebounder with sure hands. Plays disciplined defense, is comfortable making plays from behind in the post. Catches well in transition. Sutherland (5-3) hosts Batavia (5-2) on Wednesday.
