Seniors Nigel Hayes and Zak Showalter combined for 11 points as Wisconsin opened the game outscoring Rutgers, 13-2 through the first seven minutes.
Rutgers finished shooting 31.1 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from three. Wisconsin finished 43.4 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from three.
Wisconsin won the rebounding battle over Rutgers 44-35, three over their average of 41 per game, which has them ranked 32nd in the country. Rutgers ranked seventh in the nation in rebounding going into the game, averaging 44 per game.
Rutgers struggled with turnovers, finishing with 22 turnovers to Wisconsin’s 15. They normally do not have such trouble, averaging 13 per game and ranked 148th in the country.
Hayes led Wisconsin with 20 points and six rebounds, with sophomore forward Ethan Happ adding a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Wisconsin improves to 12-2 and Rutgers drops to 11-3.
