Saint Joseph’s junior Shavar Newkirk was named the Philadelphia Big 5 Co-Player of the Week for December 12, sharing the award with Josh Hart of Villanova.
Newkirk scored a game-high 27 points and netted the game-winning three-point play to lead Saint Joseph’s to a 72-71 come-from-behind win over local rival Drexel in SJU’s only action of the week.
The 6-0 guard from New York, N.Y., scored the Hawks’ final 11 points of the game, starting with a jumper at 4:27 that forced a 63-63 tie. He connected on 3-of-3 field goals and 5-of-6 from the foul line in the final four minutes. Newkirk’s drive and ensuing free throw with 10.7 seconds remaining proved to be the deciding points as the Hawks had rallied from 11 points down.
Newkirk currently leads Saint Joseph’s in scoring with a career-best 21.1 points per game, while ranking third in the Atlantic 10. He has scored 20-plus points in all but two games this season for the 4-4 Hawks.
Saint Joseph’s returns to action on Wednesday when it visits Princeton for a nationally-televised game on ESPNU. Game time is 5 p.m.
