CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Loyola Maryland sophomore guard Andre Walker was named the Patriot League Men’s Basketball The Rock Player of the Week while Army West Point freshman forward Matt Wilson was selected as The Rock Rookie of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Walker’s game winning layup against Stony Brook with five-tenths of a second remaining was a Sports Center Top 10 play last week in a game where he scored a season-high 24 points. It is the second player of the week honor that Walker has earned during his career.
Wilson earned rookie of the week honors for the second time scoring in double-figures in both of the Black Knights victories last week.
Wilson’s teammate, sophomore guard Jordan Fox is a weekly honorable mention after averaging 13.0 points per game last week, while Lehigh senior center Tim Kempton also earns honorable mention after nearly averaging a double-double with 13.5 points and 9.5 rebounds over two games. Holy Cross senior guard Robert Champion and Colgate freshman forward Will Rayman also earn honorable mention for their performances in last week’s action.
PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL THE ROCK PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Andre Walker, Loyola Maryland, So., 6-2, G, Westbury, N.Y./Christ The King
Over two games Walker averaged 18.0 points, 3.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.0 steal per game to lead the Greyhounds to a 2-0 week. Against Stony Brook, Walker hit the game-winning layup with five-tenths of a second left, while shooting 7-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-7 from distance to score a season-high 24 points. Walker also had five assists. On Saturday he struggled from the floor against Mount St. Mary’s, but still finished with 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots to help in a 64-57 victory. Walker leads the League in free-throw percentage at 91.4 percent (32-for-35).
PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL THE ROCK ROOKIE OF THE WEEK,
Matt Wilson, Army West Point, Fr., 6-9, F/C, Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County
Wilson earns his second Patriot League Rookie of the Week honor this season, after averaging 12.5 points over two games and shooting 78.6 percent from the floor in a 2-0 week for the Black Knights. Wilson scored in double figures in both games, going 7-for-9 from the floor for 15 points in a decisive victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. On Saturday, Wilson went 4-of-5 from the floor for 10 points, while pulling down eight rebounds. Wilson leads the Patriot League with a 74.1 field goal percentage (40-for-54), while averaging 5.3 rebounds per game.
WEEKLY HONORABLE MENTION
Jordan Fox, Army West Point, So., 6-1, G, Jackson County, Ky./Jackson County
Fox averaged 13.0 points and 2.5 rebounds per game to lead Army West Point to a 2-0 week with wins over Fairleigh Dickinson and St. Francis Brooklyn. Against FDU, Fox went 7-of-12 from the floor for 15 points, to go with five assists and two rebounds. He scored 10 points and dished out a team-high eight assists in Army’s victory over St. Francis Brooklyn.
Tim Kempton, Lehigh, Sr., 6-10, C/F, Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Prep
Kempton averaged 13.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game in a 1-1 week for Lehigh. Kempton scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds in a loss to La Salle on Wednesday. Against Robert Morris, Kempton posted his fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while blocking three shots with two steals to lead the Mountain Hawks to a win.
Robert Champion, Holy Cross, Sr., 6-6, G, Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic
Champion averaged 15.0 points and 2.0 steals per game during a 1-1 week for Holy Cross. Against Albany he led the Crusaders with a season-high 22 points, while connecting on 4-of-7 3-pointers, and three steals in the victory. He finished with eight points and four rebounds in a close loss to New Hampshire on Saturday.
Will Rayman, Colgate, Fr., 6-8, F, New York, N.Y./Millbrook School
Rayman averaged 15.3 points and 5.5 rebounds during a 1-3 week for Colgate. He scored in double-figures in three of the Raiders four games, opening the week with 15 points in a win over Union (N.Y.). He scored 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting, while pulling down nine rebounds in a loss to The Citadel. He also had 15 points and six rebounds in a loss to Campbell. Rayman closed out his week with nine points, three rebounds and four assists in a loss to USC Upstate on Sunday.
