STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Andre Walker scored the last of his game-high 24 points on a driving layup with five-tenths of a second remaining in regulation, lifting Loyola University Maryland to a 71-70 victory over host Stony Brook University at the Island Federal Credit Union Arena.
Kameron Mitchell put the Seawolves (1-5 overall) up one, 70-69, on two free throws with seven ticks remaining, and Loyola inbounded the ball to Walker.
The junior guard broke soft pressure in the backcourt and drew contact from Mitchell in the paint, hoisting the ball over the Stony Brook defender for the final two of the game. Walker finished the game with a season-high 24 points, making 7 of 14 field goals, 4 of 7 threes and all six of his free throws. He also had a team-high five assists and a steal.
Chancellor Barnard had a season-best 16 points, while Jarred Jones added 11 including two key baskets late. Cam Gregory had a game- and season-best 10 rebounds, and six points, for the Greyhounds (3-4).
Stony Brook, a 2016 NCAA Tournament team, led by as many as seven in the second half, but Loyola chipped away to tie the game at 60-60 with 4:11 left on a Walker three.
Neither Loyola, nor Stony Brook could take a lead of more than two from that point forward.
Mitchell had two free throws at 1:06 to give the Seawolves a 66-65 advantage, but Jones came back with a basket 15 seconds later to slip the Greyhounds in front.
Tyrell Sturdivant, who had 18 points to lead Stony Brook, converted a layup in the paint with 32 seconds left, and the lead swung back to the Seawolves. Jones, however, scored again for Loyola with just over 24 seconds left, and Loyola had a one-point lead.
Lucas Woodhouse drove the left side for Stony Brook, but his shot attempt was blocked by Walker. Woodhouse corralled the rebound, though, and got it to Mitchell who was fouled on a follow-up, leading to his free throws and Walker’s game-winner.
Woodhouse was the only other Stony Brook player in double-figures with 12 points. Loyola held the Seawolves to 37.9 percent shooting from the field, 29.4 percent in the first half.
The Greyhounds led by as many as 11 in the first half, going up 33-22 on two Walker free throws with 3:26 left in the period. Stony Brook, however, closed the stanza on a 13-0 run to lead 35-33 at the break. A Woodhouse three 2:52 into the second half put Stony Brook up by seven, one of four times after the break they’d lead by that margin.
Sturdivant made 1 of 2 at the free-throw line with 12:37 to put the Seawolves up 49-42, but Loyola held them scoreless for more than five minutes and tied the game at 49-49 on a Jones layup with just under eight to play.
A traditional 3-point play by Sturdivant at 6:45 gave Stony Brook a three-point lead, but that was the most either team would lead by down the stretch.
The Greyhounds return to Reitz Arena on Saturday, Dec. 3, to take on Mount St. Mary’s University in a 4 p.m. game that will air live on MASN, the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network.
