CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Bucknell junior center Nana Foulland has been named Patriot League Men’s Basketball The Rock Player of the Week while American freshman guard Sa’eed Nelson earns The Rock Rookie of the Week honors. Foulland posted back-to-back double-doubles to help the Bison to a 3-0 week, including a win over Vanderbilt. Nelson scored 24 points in each of the Eagles games last week and leads all Patriot League freshman in scoring (15.8 points per game).
Foulland (15.7 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 1.7 bpg) earns his first player of the week honor after nearly averaging a double-double over three games last week. He was selected as a weekly honorable mention last week and breaks Tim Kempton’s string of two consecutive player of the week honors. Nelson (24.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 2.5 apg, 2.5 spg) becomes the third different freshman to earn rookie of the week honors in as many weeks in a talented Patriot League freshman class.
Lehigh junior Kahron Ross earns honorable mention for the first time this season after averaging 19.5 ppg and 4.5 apg in his team’s two-game road trip over the weekend. Loyola Maryland senior forward Jarred Jones earns honorable for the second time this season after averaging 18.5 points and 8.0 rebounds over two games. Sophomore forward Karl Charles earns his first weekly honorable mention of the season averaging 13.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game to help Holy Cross go 2-1. Colgate freshman Will Rayman rounds out the weekly honorable mentions after a 28-point performance against Penn State last week.
PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL THE ROCK PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Nana Foulland, Bucknell, Jr., 6-9, C, Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic
Foulland was instrumental in Bucknell’s 3-0 week, registering a pair of double-doubles, while averaging 15.7 ppg, 9.0 rpg and 1.7 bpg, while shooting 71 percent from the field. In a win over Vanderbilt, Foulland finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots, while hitting a pair of crucial free throws within the last minute of the game. Foulland posted his second consecutive double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to go with two blocked shots and three steals in a decisive win over Norfolk State. He also shot 9-of-10 to finish with 18 points in a win over Northern Colorado. Foulland is second in the League and 10th in the nation in field goal percentage (71.2%).
PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL THE ROCK ROOKIE OF THE WEEK,
Sa’eed Nelson, American, Fr., 6-1, G, Pleasantville, N.J./Saint Augustine Prep
Nelson, the top freshman scorer in the Patriot League, scored 24 points apiece in both of American’s games last week. The freshman point guard finished with 24 points, five rebounds and two assists against Wagner, before scoring 24 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists and four steals against Saint Francis (Pa.). Nelson is currently averaging 15.8 ppg through five games this season.
WEEKLY HONORABLE MENTION
Kahron Ross, Lehigh, Jr., 5-11, G, Jonesboro, Ark./Jonesboro
Ross averaged 19.5 points, 4.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game during a 1-1 week for Lehigh. Ross tied with a team-high 18 points and five assists in the Mountain Hawks 87-73 victory over Mississippi State on Friday to help capture the program’s first victory over an SEC opponent. He also scored 21 points and had four assists in a return to his hometown of Jonesboro, Arkansas in a loss to Arkansas State.
Karl Charles, Holy Cross, So., 6-6, F, Roselle, N.J./Rutgers Prep
Charles averaged 13.3 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 6.3 apg and 1.3 spg, while shooting 52.4 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from 3-point range during a 2-1 week for Holy Cross. Charles scored 14 points in a victory over Harvard, while scoring 14 and dishing out a game-high nine assists in a win over South Carolina State. Charles also was strong in the Crusaders loss to Monmouth, finishing with 12 points and eight assists.
Jarred Jones, Loyola Maryland, Sr., 6-6, F, Havre de Grace, Md./John Carroll School
Jones averaged 18.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg and 2.5 spg during the Greyhounds 1-1 week. Jones led Loyola Maryland in scoring in both games, with his second double-double of the season in a win over Fairfield with 24 points and 10 rebounds. He also had two blocks and two steals against the Stags. Jones scored a team-high 13 points against No. 12/18 Creighton on Saturday.
Will Rayman, Colgate, Fr., 6-8, F, New York, N.Y./Millbrook School
Rayman had a breakout game, scoring a career-high 28 points in a loss at Penn State, while falling four points short of Adonal Foyle’s program freshman scoring record. On the week, Rayman averaged 20.5 ppg and 3.0 rpg, while shooting 52 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from beyond the arc.
