CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Lehigh senior center Tim Kempton has been selected as the Patriot League Men’s Basketball The Rock Player of the Week after a 25-point, seven rebound performance at No. 7/8 Xavier on Friday night. Army West Point freshman forward Matt Wilson earns The Ball Rookie of the Week honors after scoring 10 points in his collegiate debut against No. 5 Oregon on Friday.
PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL THE ROCK PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tim Kempton, Lehigh, Sr., 6-10, C/F, Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Prep
Kempton earns the first men’s basketball Player of the Week honor this season after finishing with 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the floor and 7-of-9 from the free throw line in Lehigh’s season-opening, 84-81 loss at No. 7/8 Xavier last Friday. The Preseason Player of the Year also added seven rebounds, one block and one steal, while scoring five points in the game’s last 40 seconds to give the Mountain Hawks a chance to tie the score in their final possession. This was Kempton’s 21st career game with 20 or more points and 80th in double figures.
PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL THE ROCK ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Matt Wilson, Army West Point, Fr., 6-9, F/C, Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County
Wilson earns the first men’s basketball Rookie of the Week honor after scoring 10 points in his collegiate debut in Army West Point’s 91-77 loss at No. 5 Oregon on Friday evening. Wilson finished second on his team in scoring, hitting on 5-of-7 attempts from the field in 17 minutes, while scoring six of his 10 points in the second half. He also added two rebounds.
WEEKLY HONORABLE MENTION
Zach Thomas, Bucknell, Jr., 6-7, F, Ijamsville, Md./Oakdale
Thomas averaged 20.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists for two games in a 1-1 weekend for Bucknell. The junior forward scored a team-high 25 points to go with eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals in Friday’s win over Manhattan. Against Wake Forest, Thomas went 6-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range to finish with 16 points and three rebounds.
Eric Fanning, Boston University, Sr., 6-5, G, Trenton, N.J./Perkiomen (Pa.)
Fanning scored a team-high 29 points on 10-of-18 shooting in Boston University’s 87-77 loss at Northeastern last Friday. Fanning scored 19 of his 29 points in the second half, helping BU cut an 18-point deficit to five. He pulled down seven rebounds, handed out a team-high four assists and had two blocks and two steals for the Terriers.
Jarred Jones, Loyola Maryland, Sr., 6-6, F, Havre de Grace, Md./John Carroll School
Jones led the Greyhounds with 21 points and 11 rebounds, recording the eighth double-double of his career in a 65-60 loss to Duquesne on Friday night. The senior also added two assists and two steals.
Jordan Cohen, Lehigh, Fr., 6-1, G, Tarzana, Calif./Campbell Hall
Cohen scored nine points, while going 3-of-4 from 3-point range in just 11 minutes of action in Lehigh’s 84-81 loss to No. 7/8 Xavier on Friday night. He also added one steal and one assist.
