WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross head men’s basketball coach Bill Carmody announced today that five student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to play for the Crusaders. Austin Butler (Latrobe, Pa.),Kyle Copeland (Leesburg, Va.), Matt Faw (King of Prussia, Pa.), Caleb Green (Londonderry, N.H.) and Connor Niego (La Grange, Ill.) will join the Holy Cross program in the fall of 2017.
“We have added five outstanding young men to our program in the Class of 2021,” said Carmody. “They are a group of very competitive guys, who have the versatility to play multiple positions. I am also extremely impressed by their ability to shoot the ball. They should make an immediate impact on our program next season.”
Butler is a 6-foot-5, 200-pound guard, who plays for head coach Brad Wetzel at Greater Latrobe Senior High School in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. He averaged 26.5 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game during his junior season, while leading his team to an overall record of 22-3 and a trip to the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League Class AAAA semifinals. A 1,000-point scorer, Butler was selected as the Westmoreland Tribune-Review Player of the Year and earned second team All-State honors last season.
Copeland is a 6-foot-5, 170-pound guard who is currently playing a post-graduate year at Phillips Exeter (N.H.) Academy, for head coach Jay Tilton. A 2016 graduate of the Tuscarora High School, he was named Virginia High School League Group 5A second team All-State as a senior, in addition to earning honorable mention All-Met honors from the Washington Post. A three-year team captain, Copeland holds school records for the most points scored in a game (40), a season (499 as a senior) and a career (1,240).
Faw is a 6-foot-8, 200-pound forward who plays for head coach Jason Quenzer at Upper Merion Area High School just outside of Philadelphia. He earned first team All-Suburban One League American Conference honors as a junior, while leading his team to an overall record of 16-6 and a trip to the District 1 Class AAAA playoffs. Faw also averaged 19.0 points, 10.1 rebounds, 2.5 blocked shots and 2.4 assists per game last season.
Green is a 5-foot-11, 150-pound guard who plays for head coach Gregor Makechnie at Proctor Academy. He was named second team Class AA All-New England by the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council as a sophomore, while being an honorable mention selection as a junior. Green averaged 16.0 points, 7.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game last season, and received his team’s Coaches’ Award.
Niego is a 6-foot-8, 205-pound forward who plays for head coach Tom Sloan at Lyons Township High School in the Chicago metro area. He averaged 18.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots per game last year, and enters his senior season ranked ninth in school history in career rebounds and 17th in career points scored. A two-year team captain and team MVP, Niego has twice been named All-West Suburban Silver Conference.
Holy Cross is coming off a 2015-2016 season in which it won the Patriot League Tournament title, and posted its first NCAA Tournament victory since 1953. The Crusaders are scheduled to open the 2016-2017 campaign on Sunday, Nov. 13, when they travel to South Carolina for a 6:00 p.m. game.
