ROCHESTER, NY – The Rochester Red Wings organization and former World Series Champion manager Joe Altobelli have been selected to the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame as part of the 2016 class. The induction ceremony will take place on Sunday, November 13 in Troy, NY.
The Red Wings organization becomes the first team or organization selected into the NYSBHOF. The Wings have won an International League-best 10 Governors’ Cups since the trophy was awarded to the playoff champion beginning in 1933. Rochester’s professional baseball history dates back to 1877.
“The Rochester Red Wings are a pure New York State franchise,” NYSBHOF Executive Director Rene LeRoux said. “The Red Wings are a worthy first choice.”
Altobelli managed the Baltimore Orioles in 1983, leading the O’s to their third and most recent World Series title. He managed parts of seven Major League seasons while compiling a 437-407 record. Altobelli also led Rochester to a 502-350 record as manager from 1971-76, leading the Wings to Governors’ Cups titles in ‘71 and ‘74. He also worked for the Red Wings as General Manager from 1992-94 and radio broadcaster from 1998-2008. Altobelli was elected to the Red Wings Hall of Fame in 1989 and the International League Hall of Fame in 2008.
Johnny Antonelli, who was born in Rochester and attended high school at Jefferson High, will also be inducted as part of the 2016 class. He made his Major League debut as an 18-year-old with the Boston Braves in 1948 and enjoyed a 12-year MLB career. Antonelli is also a longtime honorary member of the Rochester Community Baseball Board of Directors.
