ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University men’s soccer team defeated the Dayton Flyers, 1-0, on a game-winning goal from Isaiah Wilson in overtime Saturday at the Marra Athletics Complex on Senior Day.
The two teams took a scoreless tie through regulation and into overtime. The Bona keeper Luke Iacobellis made multiple game-preserving saves down the stretch to keep Dayton out of the goal. Throughout regulation, Dayton rifled shots toward the left side of the goal, forcing Iacobellis to make emphatic saves diving to his right. The sophomore made seven total saves, and earned his second clean sheet of the season.
Iacobellis’ brightest moment came early in overtime at the 94:51 mark. Dayton’s Rok Taneski broke free behind the Bona defense, and earned a breakaway in front of the goal. Taneski fired, but, Iacobellis charged and made the stop, sending the shot wide.
The Bonnies made the most of Iacobellis extending the game in overtime, as the St. Bona then pressed on the Flyers’ end. In the 97th minute, a St. Bonaventure shot attempt was blocked by a Dayton defender, and ricocheted to Wilson inside the box. Wilson fired, and the shot went off the cross bar, down behind the goal line and out back into the action. After a discussion amongst the referees, the goal was confirmed, and the Bonnies earned their second conference victory.
St. Bonaventure fired 15 total shots in the game, four each from Wilson and Paul Afful. Kieran Toland earned three shots while Bonaventure Akinlosotu shot the ball twice. Kosi Nwafornso and Noel Orozco had one shot apiece.
The last Bona win over Dayton was Oct. 27, 2013. That win not only also came in 1-0 fashion, but similarly improved the Bonnies to a 2-2-1 record in A-10 games.
St. Bonaventure will play its final home game on Wednesday as George Washington comes to the Marra Athletics Complex. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
