ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University men’s soccer team worked a scoreless draw with Duquesne Wednesday on a cold, foggy evening at the Marra Athletics Complex.
Sophomore keeper Luke Iacobellis made eight saves on the night while Duquesne’s Evan Kozlowski saved all five Bona shots on goal.
Duquesne – ranked 35th in the most recent RPI poll, which is the best ranking of any team in the Atlantic 10 – outshot the Bonnies, 17-10. Iacobellis held tough, though, as the Dukes outshot the Brown and White, 10-2, in the second half. The Dukes also tested the St. Bonaventure defense with 17 total corner kick chances.
The two teams struggled to line up clear strikes on net, but St. Bonaventure’s best opportunity came just before halftime. At the 41:58 mark, Kwame Opoku fired a shot 20 yards out from the center of the field toward the upper-right corner. But, Kozlowski leapt and caught the ball with two hands to neutralize the threat.
The Dukes’ best chance came shortly after the break as a shot from Fredrik Borenstein at the 54:19 mark hit the left post and went wide.
Both teams fit in one final run that resulted in shots in the final three minutes of regulation, but both defenses held strong to force overtime.
The Dukes’ two shots totaled all of the offensive chances in the first overtime period.
The two teams pressed, knowing the second overtime period was their last chance to come away with a victory. The Bonnies earned two shots to Duquesne’s one, but the Dukes made the most of their one chance as Iacobellis was forced to make a game-preserving save in the final minute of the game. Duquesne’s Ryan Landry found himself open near the left Bona post, and received a header after a scrum in front of a net off a corner kick. He placed the header near post, but Iacobellis was there to catch the shot and move the ball up field for the closing seconds of the game.
Kieran Toland made up half of the Bonnies’ 10 total shots, as he put four of his five chances on net. Opoku, Kosi Nwafornso, Jacob Dyck, Matthew Lane and Paul Afful had one shot apiece.
Iacobellis earned his first cleansheet of the season tonight.
This evening’s game marks the second double-overtime match of the season for the Brown and White. The first came in a 1-1 draw against Bucknell in the home opener on Aug. 28.
The Bonnies will now travel for a two-game road trip to take on Davidson at 3:00 p.m. Saturday and UMass on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
