NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Three former Atlantic 10 women’s basketball student-athletes will be continuing their education overseas as part of the Sport Changes Life Victory Scholar Program. DaLacy Anderson from George Washington will be attending Waterford Institute of Technology while Saint Joseph’s Sarah Fairbanks will attend Dublin City University. Ebony Wells from La Salle will be attending National University of Ireland Galway.
While pursuing graduate programs at top universities in Ireland, the three will work to mentor youth while continuing to play basketball as part of the program. They will coach and mentor young people in neighboring local communities and gain valuable work-life experience through internships, partnerships and friendships, cultural exchange and enrichment.
The Atlantic 10 Conference partnered with the Victory Scholar Program, which is administered by Sport Changes Life, in 2013. Through its programs, including Victory Scholar, Sport Changes Life raises the aspirations of young people on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, working to establish a global initiative that benefits society by making positive changes using sporting role models. The Victory Scholars have the opportunity to enhance and develop their own lives while providing a positive and life changing experience to the youth they work with in the community, giving the student-athletes with a once in a lifetime experience.
A two-time Atlantic 10 Champion with the Colonials, Anderson saw action in 27 games and made two starts as a senior, while averaging nearly seven minutes per contest. She earned a spot on the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the spring semester and was recognized on the GW Athletics Academic Dean’s List. A marketing major from Bolingbrook, Ill., she also made that list during her junior season, when she saw action in 25 games.
Fairbanks is one of only two players in SJU history to score more than 1,000 points, grab 600 rebounds and block 100 shots. She capped her career third all-time in blocked shots (113), 10th in rebounds (636) and 19th in points (1,064). She was a recipient of the Class of 1950 Award as a senior and earned the team’s Ellen Ryan MVP honor along with the team’s Best Defensive Player Award, Chris DiJulia Inspirational Award and the Loyalty and Leadership Award. An interdisciplinary health services major from Elizabethtown, Pa., she was named to the A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and SJU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
Wells, a native of Groveton, Ga., had three double-digit scoring games as a senior at La Salle, averaging 3.6 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. As a junior, she played in all 31 games with 27 starts in her first season as an Explorer, including scoring a career-high 17 points in a win at VCU. Wells was a member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and was a finance and accounting major.
