Canisius head men’s basketball coach Reggie Witherspoon announced today (Aug. 16) that Jibreel Faulkner (Washington, D.C.) will join the Golden Griffin roster for the 2016-17 academic year. Faulkner spent the 2015-16 season at San Jacinto Junior College in Pasadena, Texas, and he will have three years of eligibility remaining at Canisius.
“We are very pleased to add Jibreel to our program,” Witherspoon said. “Coach [Chris] Hawkins recruited Jibreel when he was on staff at Radford and Jibreel chose to go elsewhere out of high school. Through the recruiting process, coach Hawkins was able to reach back out to the young man and we were fortunate enough to bring him to our campus and we had a good visit.
We are happy to add Jibreel to our roster because he has three years of eligibility left, so we can balance out the roster a bit by adding another guy to that class. I’m excited to see his growth on the court, in the classroom and in our community over the next three years here at Canisius.”
Faulkner originally signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Cal State Northridge in 2014-15. He did not appear in a game for the Matadors and earned a redshirt before transferring to San Jac. With the Ravens, the 6-foot-8, 200-pound forward played in 28 games, where he averaged 4.8 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. San Jac posted a 22-10 overall record and a 12-7 mark in league play while earning a trip to the NJCAA Region XIV Tournament.
Faulkner played his scholastic basketball at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Washington, D.C., where he was a two-year starter for the Rough Riders. In his senior year, he helped the team to a 25-6 record after he was good for 9.2 points and 8.2 boards per game. In that year, Theodore Roosevelt won both the DCIAA and DCSAA championships. For his efforts on the floor as a senior, Faulkner was named the 2014 D.C. Male Athlete of the Year.
Witherspoon also announced today that guard Raven Owen will not return to the program for the 2016-17 academic year.
