Gavin Stupienski headed the 2016 New York Collegiate Baseball League draft class. The Arizona Diamondbacks chose the former Hornell Dodger in the 12th round of the MLB Draft. Stupienski has settled into a spot with the AZL D-Backs of the rookie Arizona League. Stupienski is one of three former Hornell Dodgers who heard their name called.
Arizona selected Conner Grey (’14-15) in the 20th round while the Minnesota Twins chose Hank Morrison in the 22nd. Grey is 3-1 for the Missoula Osprey of the rookie Pioneer League. Morrison has collected four hits and two RBI for the Elizabethton Twins of the Appalachian League. Both Grey and Morrison played on the 2014 Dodger team which established a regular season record with a mark of 38-8. The ’14 Dodgers went on to win the NYCBL Championship Series. Bryce Zak (Hornell ’11) signed a free agent deal with the Tampa Bay Rays. Zak has made seven relief appearances with the GCL Rays of the rookie Gulf Coast League.
Mike Bunal (Sherrill ‘13/Oneonta ’15) went in the 17th to the Colorado Rockies. Bunal has made eight appearances and thrown six innings for the Boise Hawks of the Class A (Short Season) Northwest League. Marc Iseneker (Sherrill ’14) joined Bunal as former Silversmiths to hear their name called. The Texas Rangers chose Iseneker in the 28th round. Iseneker has been assigned to the Spokane Indians of the Northwest League.
Chosen by the San Diego Padres in the 16th round, Chris Mattison (’15) became the first Cortland Crush ever to be taken in the MLB Draft. Mattison plays for the Tri-City Dust Devils of the Northwest League.
The Washington Nationals chose Conner Simonetti (Geneva Twins ’14-15) in the 13th round. Simonetti has collected six extra-base hits including three home runs for the GCL Nationals. Four former Oneonta Outlaws have started their professional careers.
Brandon Agar, Heath Holder and Matt Milburn all played on the 2013 NYCBL champion Outlaws. Agar signed a free agent deal with the Chicago White Sox. In seven appearances, Agar has struck out eight and walked three over 10.2 innings for the AZL White Sox. Holder has made eight appearances on the mound for the Grand Junction Rockies, the Pioneer League affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Milburn has struck out 22 and walked one over 15 innings of work for the AZL Athletics. The Atlanta Braves selected Ramon Osuna (Oneonta ’14) in the 14th round. Osuna is hitting .344 with four RBI over his last ten games for the Danville Braves of the Appalachian League. In all, four alums were selected less than one year after playing in the NYCBL marking the highest such number since 2012. The Oneonta Outlaws left the NYCBL after the 2015 season. The Geneva Twins last played in 2015.
