Canisius head men’s basketball coach Reggie Witherspoon announced Wednesday that Selvedin Planincic, Isaiah Reese and Dantai St. Louis will join the Golden Griffins’ roster for the 2016-17 academic year. The three new Griffs are the first players to join the Canisius program since Witherspoon took over as the program’s new head coach May 28.
“I am excited to add these three young men to our basketball program,” Witherspoon said. “Each one of these guys come from excellent programs and I am really looking forward to seeing them contribute on the court, in the classroom and in the community.”
A native of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Planincic is a 6-foot-11, 210-pound center who played in 28 games during the 2015-16 season at Indian Hills Community College in Centerville, Iowa. He will have two years of eligibility remaining with Canisius, starting in the 2016-17 year. Planincic was part of the Indian Hills team that posted a 29-5 overall record last year advanced to the first round of the NJCAA Championship. Prior to his season at Indian Hills, Planincic spent one season at Orangeville Prep in Mono, Ontario.
Reese comes to Canisius after spending the 2015-16 academic year at DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Fla. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound guard averaged 10 points, 5.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game for the Lakers. A graduate of Miami Christian High School, Reese served as a team captain for the Victors and earned All-Dade County First-Team honors as a senior and was named the Junior Orange Bowl Tournament MVP.
St. Louis is a 6-foot-8, 235-pound power forward who spent the previous two seasons at Orangeville Prep in Mono, Ontario. A native of Brampton, Ontario, St. Louis was a member of the same prep program that produced Jamal Murray, who was taken seventh overall by the Denver Nuggets, and Thon Maker, who was selected ninth by the Milwaukee Bucks in last week’s NBA Draft.
Planincic, Reese and St. Louis will join with Spencer Foley and Malik Johnson as newcomers on the Canisius roster for the 2016-17 campaign. Foley and Johnson singed their National Letter of Intent to join the Griffs during the NCAA’s early signing period in November 2015.
Canisius also officially announced that sophomore Cassidy Ryan and redshirt-freshman Isaiah Gurley have chosen to pursue other educational opportunities and will not return to the College for the 2016-17 academic year. Canisius is scheduled to return two starters and eight letterwinners from last year’s roster.
