SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Salt Cats lost their second game in three days to the Sherrill Silversmiths. The 5-1 victory for the Silversmiths saw Sherrill Starting Pitcher, Alexander VAraska (Lackawanna College), toss a complete game.
Veraska scorched six Salt Cats batters for strike outs without a walk through his nine innings of work. Varaska did give up the one earned run, Brandon Corneilus (Rutgers University-Camden) drove in Johnny Knight IV (Walsh University) for the only Salt Cat run of the day. Knight IV was the only player to get to Veraska going 3-3 from the dish.
Offensively, Sherrill had numerous extra-base hits which led to runs. After scoring in the fourth inning, the Silversmiths saw Skylar Mercardo (University of South Carolina-Aiken) hit a triple and score on a passed ball. Then, a Ryan Coulon (St. Thomas Aquinas College) RBI double brought in Danny Crews (Ft. Scott Community College) to make the score, 3-1.
Sherrill scored its final runs in the top of the eighth inning. Mackay Williams (Ft. Scott Community College) knocked in Danny Crews on an RBI single and the Silversmiths scored on a bases loaded walk.
The Salt Cats fall to 11-8 on the season and take on the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs tomorrow at home. A 7 p.m. first pitch is scheduled.
The Silversmiths move to 7-13 on the season and host Cortland for a 5 p.m. start.
