SHERRILL, N.Y. — David Murphy (UMass-Boston) finished a triple short of the cycle, and the Cortland Crush erased an early deficit to defeat the Sherrill Silversmiths, 10-8 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Noyes Park, Monday.
Murphy plated Luke Gilbert (SUNY Brockport) with a one-out single in a four-run third. One inning later, the Plymouth, Massachusetts native cleared the bases with a double, and the Crush never trailed again.
Andrew Taft (University of Buffalo) led the Cortland third with a base hit. Gilbert followed with another single. After Joshua Lopez (UMass-Boston) moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, Broderick Santilli (Salve Regina) loaded the bases with a walk. Greg Mula (Samford) brought home the first run when he was hit by a pitch.
Murphy followed with his first of three hits on the night, and Cortland went on to take a 4-3 lead after three.
Clayton Jeffries (Lenoir-Rhyne) picked up the win. Jeffries allowed one run on four hits and two walks over two innings. He struck out five and improved to 1-1 on the season.
Stephen Witkowski (UMass-Boston) worked 1.2 innings for his first save of the season. He is 2-0 on the season.
Murphy drove in five runs on the night. He drilled a solo shot in the ninth.
Lopez also connected on a solo shot in the eighth. He went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Christian Aybar (So. New Hampshire) sparked a three-run Sherrill eighth with a leadoff double. Aybar finished 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored on the night. Sherrill outhit Cortland 13-9.
The first-place Crush improved to 14-3 on the season.
Sherrill fell to 4-10.
Cortland hosts the Syracuse Salt Cats on Tuesday. A 6 p.m. first pitch is scheduled at Beaudry Park.
Sherrill hosts the Salt Cats on Wednesday for a noon start.
