HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Olean Oilers brought in two runs in the ninth inning for a 5-1 win over the Genesee Rapids Monday night in New York Collegiate Baseball League action.
David “Bubba” Hollins (St. Bonaventure) kick-started the Oilers with a solo shot in the first inning.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth. In all of the innings in between only three hits would be recorded by both teams combined. One of those hits came from Genesee’s Brian Hodges (Niagara CC) who placed a single to centerfield. Hodges then advanced to second on a ground ball and then third on a fly out. Hodges would also steal home to tie the game 1-1.
The Oilers found a way to take the lead in the top of the seventh. Evan Ryan (St John Fisher) recorded his first hit of the night. Matt Schneider (Mercyhurst) slammed an RBI double to center field for a 2-1 Oilers edge. Schneider advanced to third after a wild pitch. The Oilers weren’t done for the inning as Dave Vaccaro (St Bonaventure) followed through with a sacrifice fly to score Schneider.
Heading into the eighth the score was 3-1. Breton LaRose (Sacred Heart) stepped in to take Allen Murphy’s (St John Fisher) place. Murphy finished the night giving up three runs on five hits with three strikeouts over seven innings of play. Although, LaRose gave up two hits in his first inning on the mound, the Rapids defense tightened up and retired the side before a hit turned into an additional run for the Oilers.
Olean added some insurance runs in the ninth. After a walk and two doubles from Jimmy Webb (Lock Haven), Samuel Kysor (Lock Haven), and Cole Peterson (St Bonaventure) respectively, Olean plated two, making the eventual final score 5-1.
Adam Rigney (Nichols Coll) tossed for the Oilers tonight, only giving up one run on three hits with six strikeouts in eight innings pitched.
Olean’s win was the 13th straight for the Oilers and matches the NYCBL’s regular-season mark set by the 2011 Webster Yankees. Webster went on to win 14 in a row before losing their second game of the playoffs that season.
The Oilers will look to continue their streak Tuesday against the Wellsville Nitros at 7p.m. on their home field.
Genesee will travel to Basket Rd Field to face the Rochester Ridgemen Tuesday at 7p.m.
