BUFFALO, NY – Wednesday’s starting pitching matchup between Rochester’s Tommy Milone and Buffalo’s Wade LeBlanc lived up to the hype as the Red Wings bested the Bisons 3-1 at Coca-Cola Field.
The two pitchers went 7.0 innings apiece and allowed a combined 13 hits and three runs. Milone (4-0) had runners on base in all but one of his innings but he was able to limit the damage, holding the Bisons (31-28) to 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Buffalo opened the scoring in the fourth as Darrell Ceciliani singled in Junior Lake. The hit by Ceciliani went to left fielder Adam Brett Walker, who gunned to the plate in plenty of time to get the speedy Lake but Red Wings (35-25) catcher John Ryan Murphy couldn’t handle the throw.
The next half inning, Murphy just missed a three-run homer off LeBlanc (6-2) but settled for a game-tying RBI double. Wilfredo Tovar gave Rochester its first lead at 2-1 with a sacrifice fly.
LeBlanc departed before the eighth inning and was charged with two runs on five hits and a walk. The International League Player of the Month for May struck out a season-high nine batters. Milone gave up eight hits and two walks while striking out six.
David Martinez took over on the hill for the Wings to begin the eighth inning and walked the first batter of the frame before getting a fielder’s choice for the first out. Ryan O’Rourke relieved Martinez and struck out Domonic Brown looking then allowed a two-out single to Ceciliani pushing the runner to third.
J.T. Chargois entered from the bullpen and induced a ground out to end the threat. Murphy gave the Red Wings some insurance in the ninth, driving in Buck Britton for the second time in the game to give Rochester a 3-1 advantage. Chargois issued a one-out walk in the bottom half but locked down his fourth save of the season.
The Wings have been outhit by Buffalo in each of the last two games but won both. The Bisons entered Tuesday 21-1 when recording more hits than their opponent.
