HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Olean Oilers clicked on all cylinders defeating the Genesee Rapids, 8-0, in New York Collegiate Baseball League action on Wednesday.
After a 13-4 win against the Wellsville Nitros on Tuesday, the Oilers haven’t looked back. They recorded eight runs on eight hits without committing an error.
Billy Griffin (Washington Coll) was the winning pitcher for the night. The left-hander surrendered two hits over seven innings and recorded six strikeouts.
“Billy pitched really well today,” said Olean coach Bobby Bell. “Our original plan was to pitch him for 75 and he felt so good we extended it to 100 pitches.
“Anytime in a summer league, especially a wooden bat league, if you can keep the ball low and locate your fast ball you’re going to have a lot of success. Billy did that really well; I’m looking forward to getting him back on the mound in another week or so.”
On the offensive end of the game, the Oilers scored at least one run in seven out of nine innings.
“Our guys came out with a good approach at the plate,” Bell added. “In the first two games of the season we came out and struggled a little bit and then worked on some things in the cage to make small adjustments and to see better pitches and swing at better pitches. That was the key to our success at the plate tonight.”
David Yanni (Pittsburgh) paced the offense for Olean going 2-for-2 at the plate with a solo shot to right field. The Oilers second baseman collected three walks and scored twice.
Aaron Phillips (St. Bonaventure) recorded two RBI for the Oilers.
“Our mentality is to score every inning and we almost fulfilled that,” Bell finished. “Hopefully we can keep that rolling into tomorrow.”
Olean’s Cole Peterson (St. Bonaventure) scored three runs. Sam Kysor (Lock Haven) cross the plate twice.
The Oilers will take on the Wellsville Nitros Thursday at Bradner Stadium at 10:30am.
The Genesee Rapids will resume action on Thursday hosting the Rochester Ridgemen at 7:00pm.
