SHERRILL, N.Y. — Zachary Durant (Siena) hurled seven innings, and the Sherrill Silversmiths defeated the Cortland Crush, 7-3 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action Beaudry Park, Monday.
Durant allowed three runs on six hits and one walk. The freshman struck out four and retired nine straight from the third through the fifth and 14 of 15 batters overall.
Ryan Coulon (St. Thomas Aquinas) and Michaela Villa (Lackawanna) led the Silversmiths with a home run and a double, respectively.
The Silversmiths stormed out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning Mackay Williams (Fort Scott CC), Dylan Pounds (Pitt-Greensburgh) and Danny Crews (Fort Scott CC) strung together three hits to set the table for the Silversmiths.
Cortland responded in the second with an RBI single from Joshua Lopez (Mass-Boston).
David Murphy (UMass-Boston) knotted the score at three in the top of the third when he demolished a homer to left center.
In the sixth inning, the Silversmith offense was too much to handle for the Crush bullpen. Coulon belted a home run over the right field fence while Darren Hasch (Fort Scott CC) and Villa added runs for the Silversmiths later in the inning.
An insurance run was tacked on by the Silversmiths in the bottom of the eighth as Villa squared a fastball to the right-center field gap.
After the home run by Murphy in the third, Durant of the Silversmiths shut the door on the Crush. He tossed four straight innings of scoreless ball, and handed the ball to the bullpen. Relievers Daniel DePaoli (Hamilton) and Alexander Varaksa (Lackawanna) both tossed a scoreless inning of relief to seal the victory.
“During a game a pitcher has to make a big pitch to get a big out, but we weren’t effective in doing that today,” Cortland head coach, Daniel Payne, said.
Lopez finished 2-for-3 for Cortland.
Cortland will host Sherrill Tuesday at Greg’s Field at Beaudry Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00pm.
