PHILADELPHIA – Saul Phiri (Haverhill, Mass. / Putnam Science Academy (Conn.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play men’s basketball at La Salle, head coach Dr. John Giannini announced today.
“Saul is an outstanding scorer who has great potential,” Giannini said. “We have very high expectations for him. His character will make him a good teammate and a team member that we can all be proud of on and off the court. He is a perfect fit for us.”
Phiri (6-4, 200) helped Putnam Science to a 37-4 record this season and a Final Four berth in the National Prep School tournament. Putnam finished the season ranked fourth in the national rankings.
He averaged 12.2 points per game and connected on 107 three-pointers. The guard averaged 5.3 rebounds, second on the team, and 2.3 assists per game.
Phiri (pronounced FEAR-ee) previously played two seasons for Worcester Academy and was named to the NEPSAC Class AA 1st Team. He started his career at Haverhill High School, averaging 13.3 ppg. on his way to All-Eagle Tribune honors.
He is a native of Harare, Zimbabwe who moved with his family to America when he was three.
