ALBANY, NY – After the Iona College Gaels Women’s Basketball Team won the championship earlier in the day, the Iona College Gaels Men’s Basketball Team defeated Monmouth University 79-76 in the men’s championship final. This marks the first time since Manhattan College in 2003 that one institution has won both the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships. Before Manhattan, Loyola won both titles back in 1994. Iona College is just the third program to take home both trophies.
A.J. English paced the Gaels with 19 points and was one of four Iona College Gaels to post double-digit scoring performances. Jordan Washington finished with a double-double, scoring 15 points and recording 13 rebounds. Isaiah Williams scored 17 points, connecting on four three-pointers. Deyshonne Much added 15 for the Gaels in the championship victory.
Monmouth University battled back and forth with Iona College in this championship final. Je’lon Hornbeak scored 20 points on seven-for-seven shooting and connected on all five of his three-point attempts. Justin Robinson scored 14 points and Micah Seaborn added 10 for the Hawks. Hornbeak is just the second men’s basketball player to post a 1.000 field goal percentage in a MAAC championship tournament game.
Iona College will represent the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference by the earning the leagues automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
