ALBANY, NY – The second quarterfinal matchup of the 2016 MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship saw the number two seeded, Iona College Gaels defeat seventh seeded Canisius College, 73-55, at the Times Union Center.
The Gaels were led by All-MAAC First Team selection A.J. English. English finished with 20 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. Isaiah Williams added 18 points. English and Williams combined for 27 points from three-point range. Williams is now five points away from 1,000 in his career.
Canisius College, coming off a triple-overtime thriller just a night ago, were paced by Phil Valenti who finished with 13 points on five-for-eight shooting. Kassius Robertson scored 11 points for the Griffs and connected on three-of-six from long distance. Kevin Bleeker was the third Canisius player to score in double-digits. Bleeker finished with 10 points and four assists.
Iona College now moves onto the MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship semifinal to take on the winner of third seeded Siena College Saints and sixth seeded Manhattan College Jaspers, which takes place on Saturday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m. onESPN3. Iona’s semifinal matchup against either the Saints or Jaspers will be on Sunday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN3.
The 2016 MAAC Men’s Championship title game will take place on Monday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m. and will air live onESPN with the winner earning the leagues automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
