DETROIT – Former Richmond forward Justin Harper has signed a contract with the Detroit Pistons.
A 2011 Spider graduate, Harper averaged 14.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 34 games with the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA Development League this season. He shot 48.5% from the field, 40.3% from beyond the arc and 88.5% from the free-throw line. He was named to the D-League All-Star game for his efforts.
This summer, Harper played on the Pistons’ summer league team before earning a roster spot with the Brooklyn Nets for the NBA Preseason. He made it to the Nets final roster cuts after averaging 9.0 points and 19.1 minutes per game.
Harper was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round of the 2011 Draft, before being traded to Orlando where he played 14 games in the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season. He is the third Spider to play in the NBA.
Harper starred on Richmond’s NCAA Tournament teams in 2010 and 2011, leading the Spiders to the 2011 Sweet 16. He ranks 12th all-time with 1,457 career points, and seventh all-time with 179 career three-pointers.
