NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— VCU senior Melvin Johnson was named the Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week Monday, while Saint Louis freshman Jermaine Bishop was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards are for games played Feb. 15-21.
Johnson, a guard, averaged 19.5 points and shot 50 percent (15-of-30) from the field, including 47 percent (8-of-17) to lead the Rams to a pair of conference wins. In the process, he tied VCU’s career mark for 3-pointers with 269, hitting four in each game. In VCU’s win over Rhode Island, the Bronx, N.Y., native scored 19 points, dished out four assists while hitting 7-of-14 (.500) from the field and 4-for-9 (.444) from 3-point range. He followed that with 20 points and four assists in a win over rival Richmond Friday. He was 8-for-16 (.500) from the field, and 4-of-8 (.500) from beyond the arc.
Bishop led the Billikens with 18.5 points per game on the week as Saint Louis picked up two wins. The guard from Queens, N.Y., he scored a team-high 20 points on 10-of-18 shooting (.556) in the thrilling OT win at George Mason, including the game-winning bucket with five seconds remaining in overtime. He also tied career highs with six rebounds and six assists against the Patriots. Bishop followed that performance with 17 points, thanks in part to three 3-pointers, in the win against Fordham. He also was 4-of-4 from the free throw line against the Rams.

Peyton Aldridge averaged 19.5 points in a pair of wins over Saint Joseph’s and Richmond for Davidson … Dayton’s Charles Cooke averaged 19 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, including shooting 8-of-9 at the line versus St. Bonaventure … UD freshman Steve McElvene scored 12 points in each of the Flyers’ games, hitting 6-of-7 (.857) from the field at Saint Joseph’s and 5-for-6 (.833) from the field against St. Bonaventure … Micah Mason had another strong week for Duquesne, sinking 11-of-19 (.579) from 3-point range to average 24.5 points per game while registering three assists in each game … George Washington’s Tyler Cavanaugh, who was a perfect 13-of-13 from the line last week, averaged 18.0 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game in a pair of wins … Jordan Price averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists for La Salle, with 18 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in the win over St. Bonaventure … Rhode Island’s Jared Terrell averaged 21.0 points in a split week for the Rams, including a 20-point, five-assist performance in the win over Duquesne … T.J. Cline had back-to-back 20-point games for Richmond, shooting 19-31 (.613) from the field and 5-of-7 (.714) from 3-point range, scoring 25 at Davidson and 22 at VCU .… St. Bonaventure’s Jaylen Adams scored 31 points, with six rebounds and six assists in the win at Dayton and had 12 assists and no turnovers in the two games for a perfect assist-turnover ratio … Saint Joseph’s Isaiah Miles scored 32 points on 12-of-18 shooting at Davidson and had a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double in the win over Dayton … Saint Louis’ Mike Crawford scored 21 points with a career-high four steals in the win over Fordham, shooting a perfect 6-of-6 (1.000) from the field, including 3-of-3 (1.000) at the line and 6-of-7 (.857) at the free throw line.
