ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis senior Braxton Martinez and junior Zach Girrens are rising up the draft boards, according to prominent college baseball publications. Martinez is 16th on Perfect Game’s list of the top college seniors, while Girrens was named the 250th professional prospect in college baseball by D1Baseball.com. Saint Louis has had five MLB draft selections in the past three drafts.
Martinez has been the Billiken’s starting third baseman in each of the past three seasons. This year, he will also work behind the plate as SLU’s midweek catcher. Martinez enters his senior season 11th all-time at Saint Louis with 292 total bases, 12th with 200 hits, 14th in doubles with 36 and 15th in home runs with 18. Last season, he led the Billikens with 26 walks.
Girrens was Saint Louis’ top arm last year, recording a 7-1 record with 75 strikeouts and 28 walks in 70.2 innings pitched. He held opposing hitters to a .216 batting average. Girrens’ 75 strikeouts last season was the 13th-best single-season total in SLU history and the second most by a sophomore.
Saint Louis opens the season with a four-game series against BYU in Las Vegas, Nev., on Feb. 19-22. The Billikens open their home schedule onMarch 2 at 2 p.m. against fellow Jesuit institution Rockhurst.
