SHERRILL, N.Y. — Brandon Maddern (John Carroll) hurled eight innings for his first win of the season, and Geneva Red Wings defeated the Sherrill Silversmiths, 4-1 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Noyes Park.
Maddern allowed one run on four hits. He struck out five and walked six as Geneva won its fifth straight and improved to 11-5 on the season.
The Red Wings got on the the scoreboard in the bottom of the first.
Jackson Rhodes (Birmingham Southern) led with a double. Two outs later Matt Eastman (St. Bonaventure) brought home his first of two RBI in the game with a base hit.
Eastman snapped a one-all tie in the fifth with a sacrifice fly scoring Zach Wingate (Birmingham Southern).
Geneva scored a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Lucas Zilli (Michigan State) and Eastman reached on back-to-back one-out singles. After a passed ball moved the runners, Tanner Ivey (Alabama A&M) was intentionally walked to load the bases. Harry Roberson (Amherst) delivered with a single to score Zilli and Eastman for a 4-1 Geneva lead.
Zack Tomasko (Elizabethtown) worked a scoreless ninth for his third save of the season.
Luke Johnson (Bucknell) doubled home Mitch Sloan (Fort Scott CC) in the fifth for Sherrill’s lone run of the game.
Sloan finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk.
Rhodes collected two hits in five trips to the plate for Geneva.
With the win, Geneva increased its lead in the Eastern Division to two games.
Sherrill fell to 3-13 with the loss. The same two teams play again at Noyes Park on Wednesday. A 5 p.m. first pitch is scheduled.
