SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Cory Poplawski (Salve Regina) hurled eight shutout innings, and the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs walked off with a 1-0 victory over the Cortland Crush in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Onondaga Community College, Monday night.
Poplawski dealt eight shutout innings surrendering four hits. He struck out ten and walked none. The right-hander did not allow a runner past second.
Poplawksi locked horns with Nate Verst (Kentucky Wesleyan ), who tossed seven shutout frames for Cortland. Verst allowed three hits, walked two and struck out seven.
Pinch runner Alex Schutz (St. Bonaventure) made the most of his opportunity and scored the game’s only run. Schutz took Brian Colbert’s (Keuka) place after the Syracuse designated hitter singled to start the ninth. He stole second and moved to third on an error.
After Danny Walczak (Aurora) and Samuel Ellinwood (Amherst) received intentional free passes to set up the force play, Schutz scampered home as Michael Elfreth (Widener) beat out a potential game-ending double play.
George Max Navadel (St Thomas Aquinas) pitched a scoreless ninth for his first win of the season.
Syracuse threatened in the eighth.
Shane Trevino (IPFWU) singled with two outs and in a desperate attempt to plate a run and keep Poplawski alive for the win stole second and took third on an error.
Shawn Brody (Howard Payne) retired the side with a ground out and sent the game to the ninth scoreless.
Syracuse ends a three-game slide and finish the five-game series with Cortland 2-3 and climb back to .500 with a 9-9 record. The Jr. Chiefs will begin a two-game series with first place and inner city rivals the Syracuse Salt Cats Tuesday night at OCC. First pitch set for 7pm
Cortland fell to 9-8 and will head home for a 3:00 pm match up with Oneonta at Beaudry Park tomorrow and still sit 2.0 games back in the east behind the Salt Cats.
