Much of the nation might have been off for New Year’s Day, but the West Coast Conference did not take a break, with four conference games on the docket on the first day of 2015. Highlights included a big day for BYU, Saint Mary’s improving to 3-0 in conference and Pacific picking up its first conference win of 2015 in Los Angeles.

Pacific 77 Loyola Marymount 63

The Tigers picked up their first WCC win of the season behind a career high 20 from David Taylor. Pacific shot a season-high 57.4 percent.

San Diego 57 San Francisco 56

Christopher Anderson stole a possession from USF in the final seconds to seal narrow victory for the Toreros. USD’s bench chipped in 30 points.

BYU 81 Santa Clara 46

Cougars used 12-1 and 22-2 runs to take a 36-8 lead over the Broncos with 7:36 remaining in the first half en route to a blowout victory.

Saint Mary’s 68 Pepperdine 59

The Gaels made it 17 straight over Pepperdine. Brad Waldow and Stanford graduate transfer Aaron Bright chipped in 15 each to lead SMC.

They Said It

“Our guys played so well. We’ll remember this New Year’s. Not only were we on the road with a home crowd, but we were dialed in on the offensive end sharing the ball. – BYU Head Coach Dave Rose

Had a chance to catch the SMC-USF game the other night. Love how Bennett and the Gaels get Waldow into the offense. And by that I don’t mean taking a post player and making him the next stretch wannabe. Geez…just ’cause Karl Malone could do it doesn’t mean we have to send EVERY forward down that path. His one move where he gets the ball above the block makes 2 dribbles with hard drop steps and then sets up a baseline jump hook? Whoa – that’s Hakeem lite…okay extra-lite.
