BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Xavier women’s basketball team picked up an 89-71 road win at Binghamton behind a balanced offense that saw six players score in double figures. The Musketeers improve to 3-1 on the year.
Xavier led 8-2 in the opening minutes of the contest before the Bearcats (1-2) went on a 12-2 run to take a four-point advantage (14-10). Binghamton had its largest lead of the game, 21-15, at the 10:49 mark before the Musketeers battled back to tie the contest five times over the next five minutes of play. The Musketeers ended the stanza on a 17-3 run to take a 45-33 lead into intermission.
The Musketeers forced 15 turnovers in the first half, including nine in the final eight minutes of play, and scored 24 points off the miscues. Briana Glover was one of four players in double figures in the first half, going 6-for-7 from the floor. Xavier posted a .575 field-goal percentage in the first half.
Xavier started the second half on an 18-8 run to take its largest lead of the night, 63-43, with 15 minutes remaining in regulation. The Musketeers would maintain their double-figure lead for the remainder of the contest behind a .625 field-goal percentage in the second half. Xavier finished the game going 33-for-58 from the floor with a .569 field-goal percentage.
Raeshaun Gaffney and Glover both scored a team-high 18 points while Leah Schaefer chipped in a career-high 14 points. Jenna Crittendon, Kindell Fincher and Marquia Turner all added 11 points.
Xavier outrebounded Binghamton by four (31-27), led by Schaefer who had a team-high seven rebounds. The Musketeers also finished the night with 54 points in the paint and 31 points off of turnovers.
Sherae Swinson led the Bearcats with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds.
The Musketeers return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 26 against Presbyterian. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Cintas Center.
NOTES: Xavier had six players score in double figures for the first time since Jan. 12, 2006 at Saint Louis… the Musketeers hit over 50 percent of their shot attempts for the first time since a 57-55 loss to Villanova on March 1, 2014… XU has scored 89 points in a game twice this season.
