CORTLAND, NY – Coach Bill McConnell wasted no time working on his roster once the New York Collegiate Baseball League season ended, landing one of the biggest names and risers in baseball circuits around the country. Chris Mattison, a 6’4”, 190 lb. sophomore catcher out of Lancaster, Pa., and Frederick Community College in Frederick, Md., will be joining the Cortland Crush as the team’s – and the league’s – first recruit this offseason.
As a junior at Lancaster Catholic High School Mattison was named to the Rawlings 2011 Underclass Honorable Mention List and was a 2nd Team All-State catcher. He was a 1st Team All-State third baseman as a senior and was named on the 2012 MLB Draft Prospect List that year. After hitting .359 and driving in 57 runs as a freshman at Frederick CC last season, he was named to the 2nd Team All-Conference and 2nd Team All-Region squads.

Having had multiple MLB teams inquire about his skills and prospects as a pro already (Yankees, Reds, Cubs, and Braves, to date), Mattison knows the kind of attention and pressure that comes with being a top tier recruit. When Coach McConnell saw these traits in Mattison, he jumped at the opportunity to put a player with his kind of talent behind the plate in 2015. “It’s great to have a player such as Chris who projects well at the next level,” McConnell said. “We look forward to having him out there with us next season.”
