BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh men’s basketball juniors Stefan Cvrkalj and Corey Schaefer along with senior Anthony D’Orazio were named to the 2013-14 NABC Honors Court, as announced by the National Association of Basketball Coaches on Monday. The Mountain Hawks’ three honorees are the most in the Patriot League, ahead of Bucknell, Colgate and Lafayette who all had two. American and Navy each had one on the list.
Overall, a record 895 student-athletes from 338 colleges and universities earned NABC Honors Court distinction.
To be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high academic standard:
1. Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player.
2. Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic year.
3. Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.
4. Member of an NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach.
Heading into his senior year, Cvrkalj owns an outstanding 3.81 cumulative GPA in Accounting while Schaefer’s GPA stands at 3.51 in Finance. D’Orazio graduated Lehigh this past May with a 3.35 GPA in Accounting.
On the court, Schaefer finished fifth on the team in scoring, averaging 8.3 points per game, to go with 2.5 assists per contest. He was a steady force as the only Mountain Hawk to start all 32 games in 2013-14. Cvrkalj averaged 4.5 points and 2.0 rebounds, highlighted by 14 second-half points in big Patriot League wins at Navy and vs. Bucknell. D’Orazio was injured his entire senior season, but finished his Lehigh career averaging 3.8 points and 1.9 rebounds over 94 career games, led by a strong junior season which saw him start 29 times, posting 6.4 points and 3.7 rebounds per contest.
Lehigh has continued to enjoy tremendous success in the classroom, tying for the league lead with six student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. The program received another APR Public Recognition Award after posting a perfect 1,000 score for the 2012-13 score year. It marked the third straight year and fourth time in the last five years with a perfect score. In Brett Reed’s tenure as Lehigh head coach, the Mountain Hawks have an average APR of 998.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a season which saw them pick up winning streaks of five and four games while defeating Patriot League Regular Season Champion Boston University and 20-win Quinnipiac. Kempton was named the league’s Rookie of the Year while Price also garnered a spot on the All-Rookie Team. Six of Lehigh’s top seven scorers return next season.
