CORTLAND, N.Y. — The Cortland Crush defeated the Sherrill Silversmiths 15-6 in New York Collegiate Baseball League Action at Beaudry Park, Wednesday afternoon.
The victory snapped a 10-game losing streak.
After Sherill got on the board in the first on an Alex Saville (Monroe CC) RBI single, the Crush responded promptly, plating two in the bottom half of the inning. Wesley Burghardt (Brockport) knocked an RBI single. Chris Kwitzer (Buffalo) drove in another, and the Crush led 2-1.
The following inning, Cortland tripled their lead with RBI singles from, Anthony Santoro (Canisius), Geoffrey Seto (Niagara), and Kwitzer. Joel Brophy (Niagara) brought home a run with a sacrifice fly.
The Crush offense continued in the fourth, tacking on three more runs. Adam Smith (Cortland) brought home a run with a sacrifice fly, and Burghardt plated another with a single.
Cortland would score for the last time in the seventh, making the most of the inning putting up six more runs. Racusin, Kwitzer, and Burghardt all had RBI singles. Greg Jasek (Clarkson) was hit by a pitch, and Seto walked both with bases loaded. A sacrifice fly by Connor Dwyer (Saginaw Valley State) sent in Cortland’s final run of the game.
Yale Hughes (West Liberty) started on the mound for the Crush. The 6-4 right-hander had six strikeouts and walked two in five innings. Josh Mollet (St. Leo) relieved Hughes in the sixth, who in turn was relieved by Derrick Murphy (Virginia Intermont). Zachary Lander (Brockport), took over on the mound in the seventh, throwing a strikeout and a walk in two innings while allowing no runs. Yahriel Jimenez (Siena) closed for the Crush, sealing the game in four batters.
Sherrill scored again in the sixth and seventh after their lone-run in the first. In the sixth, a pitch hit Bryan Bacquer (Washington) and Ellington Hopkins (Monroe CC) with bases loaded both times.
Mitch Cavanagh (St. Johns) connected on a two-run home run.
Burghardt led the Crush with four hits, finishing with three RBI.
Kwitzer, Santoro, and Seto all had two hits apiece. Kwitzer finished with three RBI, Seto with two RBI.
Kellen Brown (Florida Atlantic), Reid Neal (Florida Atlantic), and Bacquer each finished with two hits apiece for Sherrill.
The Crush (12-25) take on the Syracuse Salt Cats (18-17) in a doubleheader at Beaudry Park, Thursday. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 pm.
The Silversmiths (19-16) will be up against the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs (13-26) at Noyes Park. A 5 p.m. first pitch is scheduled.
