GENEVA, N.Y. — The Genesee Rapids earned win number 14 Thursday night as they defeated the Geneva Twins, 2-1 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at McDonough Park.
The Rapids used a strong performance from starting pitcher Jordan White (Aurora U) to shut down the Twins and hold Geneva’s powerful offense to only five hits in the ball game.
The scoring started in the top of the first as Cory Teachout (Ashland U) struggled with his control throughout most of his outing. He walked the bases loaded in the first and with one out, Teachout walked Kellen Creech (Ave Maria U) as the first run came in to score as Tony Schultz (Northwestern Col) crossed home plate for the Rapids in the top of the first.
The Twins answered in the bottom of the first with some clutch 2 out hitting from Fernando Garcia (Murray State). White got two quick outs to open up the frame, but a two out walk to Mike Annone (Wilmington U) would come back to haunt him as Garcia would go ahead and triple to deep left center to tie the score at one.
The next few innings were quiet until the Rapids added their second and final run of the game in the top of the fourth against Cory Teachout. The Twins starter ran into some more trouble in the frame as he gave up two singles and a walk to load the bases with no outs. He almost came through recording two outs in a row with a strikeout and a pop out, but a run came across after an error by the second baseman for the Twins to make it 2-1.
That is all the Rapids needed as the Twins scattered five hits over nine innings but were unable to scratch across any more runs in the game. White went seven strong innings, striking out four and lowering his ERA almost an entire point to 4.60 after only giving up a run.
On the other side, Teachout lasted six innings against the Rapids, he struck out six but also walked six, and his control issues would prove to be his downfall as he pitched well, but was out pitched by Jordan White from Genesee.
The Twins now move to 19-11 on the season and still remain in second place. The Rapids move to 14-18 and open up the second half of the season with a win after the rain washed out Genesee last night.
The Twins hit the road to take on Wellsville in a doubleheader that starts at 2 pm. Meanwhile, the Rapids return home to Houghton to take on the Oilers in the first game at Houghton College since the All Star Game on Tuesday. That game will start at 7 pm.
