WORCESTER, Mass. — Holy Cross and the University of Pittsburgh will meet in men’s basketball this season, as announced by Holy Cross director of athletics Nathan Pine. The game between the Crusaders and the Panthers will be played at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh on Dec. 23, 2014.
“We are looking forward to playing Pittsburgh this coming season,” said Pine. “Our men’s basketball program is committed to playing a strong non-conference schedule, and we are excited about this opportunity to face a program from the ACC in front of a national audience. We will continue to look for opportunities to extend the Holy Cross brand and showcase our outstanding student-athletes on the national stage each year.”
The Crusaders and the Panthers have played only three times in their history, with Pittsburgh holding a 2-1 series advantage. The Panthers won 79-72 in Worcester on Feb. 3, 1958, and 83-71 in Pittsburgh on Feb. 6, 1959. Holy Cross earned a 77-65 victory in the last meeting between the schools on Jan. 25, 1963, in Worcester.
“The team and I are excited that we will be facing Pittsburgh this season,” said Holy Cross head coach Milan Brown. “We always like to challenge ourselves against tough competition, and the only way to do that is to play against the best. This will be an outstanding test, because Pitt should be a Top 25 team and the Petersen Events Center is one of the hardest places in the country for visiting teams to play.”
The complete 2014-2015 non-conference schedule for the Holy Cross men’s basketball team will be announced later this summer.
