CINCINNATI — Former Xavier University guard Semaj Christon was selected by the Miami Heat with the 25th pick in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft, the 55th overall selection.
Christon is the seventh former Musketeer to be selected in the NBA Draft since 2003 National Player of the Year David Westwas selected with the 18th overall selection in the 2003 first round by New Orleans. Jordan Crawford was the last Musketeer drafted by the NBA, the 27th overall selection in the 2010 first round by New Jersey. West, a two-time NBA All-Star, played for the Indiana Pacers this past season while Crawford played for the Golden State Warriors.
Christon is the ninth former Musketeer to be selected in the second round of the NBA Draft, joining Derrick Brown (2009),Romain Sato (2004), David Young (2004), Lionel Chalmers (2004), Torraye Braggs (1998), Derek Strong (1990), Vic Fleming (1984) and Bob Quick (1968).
Xavier head coach Chris Mack said: “Semaj is excited to become an NBA player. It’s been his dream since he started bouncing a basketball.”
Christon, a unanimous 2014 First Team All-BIG EAST Conference selection and a member of the 2014 All-BIG EAST Tournament Team, led Xavier in scoring each of his two seasons at Xavier. His 17.0 ppg. as a sophomore was ranked sixth in the BIG EAST.
Christon finished his career with 1,034 career points, only the second sophomore in Xavier history to reach the 1,000-point mark. He added 281 career assists.
