Twins top pitching prospect Alex Meyer allowed four runs over just 3 2/3 innings as the Red Wings dropped their third straight game and fourth of the five-game set, losing 4-2 to the Buffalo Bisons Monday night at Frontier Field.
Rochester (42-36) has now lost three straight games for the first time since May 12 and are just 6-10 over their last 16 games after a 26-game stretch in which the Wings went 20-6.
Meyer – who hasn’t completed four innings in any of his last three starts – allowed seven hits, including a pair of solo home runs, and two walks over his 73-pitch outing (45 strikes).
The Bisons (38-37) jumped on Meyer (4-4) and the Wings early plating a two-out run in the first inning courtesy of an RBI base hit by Brad Glenn. The first-inning run surrendered by Meyer was the first yielded by the hard throwing righty this season in 15 starts.
Andy LaRoche and Adron Chambers led off the second and third innings, respectively, with solo home runs off Meyer – the fifth and sixth allowed by Meyer this season.
Red Wings starters have now surrendered 19 homers in 24 June games after yielding just 13 over the first two months of the season.
LaRoche would plate the Bisons fourth and final run with a two-out single in the third.
The Wings bullpen combination of Edgar Ibarra (2 IP) and A.J. Achter (2 1/3 IP) held Buffalo scoreless over the final 4 1/3 innings to keep the Wings in the game.
Chris Rahl cut a 4-0 deficit in half with a two-run homer off Bisons reliever Kyle Drabek in the seventh inning.
Rahl would come up again, with one out in the ninth, as the tying run but struck out swinging against Ryan Tepera. Tepera then got pinch-hitter Brad Nelson to bounce out to short to end the game.
The Wings finished 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position on Monday and are just 3-for-24 over the three-game losing skid.
Daniel Ortiz, Deibinson Romero and Rahl all collected two hits on the night.
Next up for Rochester is a two-game set with Scranton/WB beginning Tuesday night at PNC Field in Moosic, PA. LHP Logan Darnell (2-4, 3.25) takes the mound in the series opener.
