SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Jon Borchert (Keuka) paced a 16-hit attack as the Syracuse Salt Cats downed the Sherrill Silversmiths, 10-8 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Onondaga Community College.
“Today’s game took three hours because we had 16 hits. Yesterday we had five or six or seven hits and we had a pitcher’s duel,” said Coach Mike Martinez of the Syracuse Salt Cats. “We outdistanced today because we hit the ball and got guys on base.”
It wasn’t about pitching, but how both teams played in the outfield, making hits, and getting some runs.
Both teams were ready to get the night rolling as they made runs in the first inning.
In the top of the first, Kevin Brice (Pomona-Pitzer) plated Bryan Baquer (Washington) and Reid Neal (Florida Atlantic U) with a base hit. Austin Bouse (Le Moyne) followed with a single scoring Brice to give the Smitties an early 3-0 lead.
It didn’t last.
Eric Poldroo (Concordia) started the home half with a double.
Anthony Morino (Mt. Union) put runners on the corners with a single. Anthony Massicci (Canisius) drove in the first Syracuse run witha hit. One out later, Adam Thoryk (St. John Fisher) brought home a run. Borchert gave the Cats a 4-3 edge with a two-RBI single.
The Silversmiths tied the score in the second when Christian Triplett (North Carolina Central) scored on a ground out.
The teams traded runs until the Salt Cats took the lead for good in the seventh.
Borchert tied the score at eight when he delivered Tom Nagy (Bentley) with a triple.
Patrick Ortland (Siena) and Borchert scored a pair of unearned runs to seal the win.
“We weren’t executing at one point, but finally something fell,” Poldroo said. “We got the lead and won the game.”
“We have the talent to really go far in this league,” Poldroo said. “We really just need to all put it together. Thank God for my teammates, these guys get on all the time.”
Morino led all with three hits and three runs scored.
Massicci tripled, had two hits and drove in two.
Borchert, Nagy and Poldroo each had two hits. Borchert drove in three.
Shane Cochran (Saginaw Valley St.) pitched a third of an inning for the win. The right-hander is 3-1 with an ERA of 1.77.
Brad Banker (St. Martin’s) tossed a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season. The Alamo, California native is 1-1 with a league-leading 0.37 ERA.
Daniel Jarrell (Washington College) took the loss. He is 1-1.
Baquer, Bouse, Brice, Neal and Triplett each had two hits.
Justin Dattilo (Maryland Eastern Shore) collected two hits, two walks and scored twice.
Kellen Brown (Florida Atlantic) drove in two with his second triple of the year.
The loss was the fifth straight for Sherrill (12-9). The Silversmiths travel to Geneva to play the Red Wings (9-8), Tuesday. A 7 p.m. first pitch is scheduled at McDonough Park.
Syracuse (11-11) gets two days off before meeting the same Silversmiths at Noyes Park in Sherrill.
