SHERRILL, N.Y. — Andrew Bonnette (Walsh U) went 4-6 with two singles, a double and a two-run home run as the Genesee Rapids beat the Silversmiths 12-4 on Sunday evening in New York State Collegiate Baseball League action at Noyes Park.
The Rapids got off to a hot start scoring one early. With the bases loaded, Jack LaMarca (Ohio Northern University) brought home Chaz Tanner (Virginia Wise) on fielder’s choice.
Sherrill starting pitcher Marc Iseneker (St. John Fisher College) was able to get out of bases-loaded jam to end the inning.
Iseneker was not as lucky in the next inning. Once again, the bases were loaded. This time, Genesee was able to capitalize on the situation. Bonnette singled and got his first RBI of the night as Dalton Combs (Huntington University) came in to score. The team got two more runs off of the bats of Jason Euler (Mesa CC) and LaMarca.
Genesee got two runs in both the third and fourth inning.
In the third, Tony Schultz (Northwestern College) walked to bring home Kellen Creech (Ave Maria University). The next run was scored on a balk by Iseneker. A pair of solo home runs were given up in the fourth. The two hitters were Riley Roberts (Fullerton College) and Combs.
Sherrill was also able to score in the third and fourth inning. The team scored one each inning. In the third, Reid Neal (Florida Atlantic University) scored on an Alex Saville (Monroe CC) single. With the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Bryan Baquer (Washington College) walked to send Justin Dattilo (Maryland Eastern Shore) home.
Combs scored another run in the sixth. Rene Rivera (Hesston College) singled him home. In the seventh, LaMarca hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Bonnette.
In the ninth, the Rapids picked up two more runs off the bat of Bonnette as he hit a two-run home run. Schultz singled in the previous at-bat. The Silversmiths got up to bat in the bottom half of the inning and scored two more before the game ended. Dalton Rook (Ft. Scott CC) singled home Kevin Brice (Pomona-Pitzer College). The next batter, Mike Aiello (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee), singled and brought home Saville. Sherrill had a possible hit robbed after Combs made a sliding catch on his knees to get Dattilo for the second out of the inning.
Iseneker took the loss for the Silversmiths, while Adam Journic (Capital U) picked up the win.
The Rapids ended the game with 17 hits. Sherrill was not far behind with 14.
“Adam threw well,” said Genesee Head Coach Tyler Rost. “He got ahead.”
For future games, Rost said that his pitchers will have to throw strikes and get ahead of the batters.
As for the other side, the team has a good amount to work on.
“Alex Saville hit the ball well,” said Sherrill Head Coach Greg Dombrowski. “It has been a frustrating couple of days. We need to make changes with attitude and worth ethic.”
Saville ended the night with four hits for the home team with three singles, a double, a run scored and an RBI.
Kellen Brown (Florida Atlantic University) and Neal both had two hits apiece. Neal also scored a run.
Shultz, Roberts and Creech all chipped in with two hits. Schultz scored two runs and drove in one while Roberts scored one and had an RBI. Creech scored once.
Combs collected three hits, one RBI and four runs scored. He also had a spectacular catch in the bottom of the ninth.
Brown Lewis (Ohio Mid-Western College) and Kyle Sanford (Plymouth State University) both pitched a scoreless inning apiece. Lewis allowed two hits, while Sanford gave up a double to Saville.
After winning 10 straight, the loss was the fourth in a row for the first-place Smitties.
