CINCINNATI – Xavier baseball player Vinny Nittoli was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 25th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. He was taken with the 741st pick in the draft.
“I am excited for Vinny and his family,” said head coach Scott Googins. “He has worked hard and overcome a lot of adversity to fulfill his dreams. He has had a big impact on our program and I’m extremely proud of Vinny.”
A native of Gibsonia, Pa. (Pine Richland), Nittoli closed the season with a 6-4 mark and was an All-BIG EAST First Team honoree. The fifth-year senior led the Musketeers with a 2.38 ERA, while helping XU to a BIG EAST Championship and the program’s second appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The right-handed throwing Nittoli jump-started Xavier’s run in the BIG EAST Tournament. He worked eight innings of two-run ball against St. John’s to propel the Musketeers to their first win en route to the conference crown.
In 51 career starts, which ranks fourth all-time at Xavier, Nittoli amassed a 19-12 record. The 19 wins rank fifth all-time at XU. Nittoli has also left his mark in Xavier’s career annals with 280 innings pitched (7th), 3.54 earned run average (10th) and 186 strikeouts (t-9th).
Nittoli is the first Musketeer drafted since Seth Willoughby was taken in the fourth round by the Colorado Rockies with the 138th overall pick in the 2012 draft.
